It needs you for food, water and a place to live.
It needs you for one more lap around the park or a game of fetch when you really need to get back to your work video calls.
It misbehaves in front of your friends and members of the public to which you embarrassingly reply ‘oh she is never usually like this’. When you know this isn’t the first time.
